  • CT scan

A Computed Tomography, called a CT Scan, is an X-ray that generates a variety of cross sectional images, providing a detailed view of a particular area in the body. It is one of the best and fastest tools for examining the chest, abdomen and pelvis. With a CT scan, you can see even the smallest bones and the tissue, blood vessels and muscles surrounding them.

  • MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging, also known as an MRI, creates a comprehensive view of the internal body in narrow layers. The scan is performed with a powerful magnet, radio waves and a computer that takes magnified pictures for evaluation. An MRI is often the preferred exam for analyzing the spinal cord, pelvis, brain and extremities such as tendons and ligaments. It can detect tiny changes in body structures and is used to diagnose injuries and diseases related to the vascular system, heart, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas and other vital organs.

  • PET/CT scan

A PET/CT scan is a combination of positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) exam. PET detects abnormal biochemistry or disease while CT pinpoints location. The test is primarily used to diagnose cancer and evaluate its response to treatment.

Because changes in biochemistry occur before a tumor forms. PET scans can often identify disease earlier than other tests that search for the presence of a tumor. PET scans require a radioactive glucose injection to measure metabolic activity. The scanner detects the radiation while the computer generates three-dimensional images of tissue function or cell activity. Since cancer cells grow faster and use glucose at a much higher rate than normal cells, they are easily detected using a PET scan.

  • Digital mammography

Digital mammography machines use X-ray technology to create images of the breast. They produce superior picture quality with less radiation than traditional film mammography, and allow the radiologist to manipulate the size, orientation, brightness and contrast of the images. Digital mammography accurately detects breast cancer in women under the age of 50 and/or with dense breasts, as well as in premenopausal and perimenopausal women. When reviewing digital mammograms, our radiologists use computer-aided detection (CAD), successful in identifying cancer at earlier stages, when it is most treatable.

  • Digital X-ray

An X-ray (radiograph) is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Imaging with X-rays involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging and a bone X-ray makes images of any bone in the body.

  • Ultrasound

An ultrasound, also called a sonogram, uses high frequency sound waves beyond the range of human hearing to view the inside of the body. These sound waves record and send echoes to a computer, which generates a video image. While other diagnostic tests evaluate hard tissues, an ultrasound detects soft tissues, such as the pelvic organs and fetus, gallbladder, pancreas, liver, stomach and kidneys.

  • Bone density (DEXA scan)

Bone Density scans used to help diagnose osteoporosis, an illness that causes bones to become brittle and break easily. The condition can be prevented and treated if a Bone Density Scan detects bone loss in time.

  • Fluoroscopy studies

Fluoroscopy is a study of moving body structures - similar to an x-ray "movie." A continuous x-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined. The beam is transmitted to a TV-like monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail. Fluoroscopy, as an imaging tool, enables physicians to look at many body systems, including the skeletal, digestive, urinary, respiratory, and reproductive systems.

Fluoroscopy may be performed to evaluate specific areas of the body, including the bones, muscles, and joints, as well as solid organs such as the heart, lung, or kidneys.

  • Laboratory services

Our diagnostic centers offer a full array of laboratory tests for patients with a doctor's prescription.

In most cases, our Board-certified radiologist’s report is sent to your doctor within 24 hours of the test.

Radiation Safety

As with other medical procedures, CT scans, X-rays, mammograms and other tests that require radiation are safe when used with care. Baptist Health takes every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of our patients.

Our radiologists and technologists have been trained to use the minimal amount of radiation necessary to obtain the needed results, whether for a mammogram, CT scan or simple X-ray. The amount of radiation used in most examinations is very small and the benefits greatly outweigh the risk of harm.

Radiation and Medical Imaging Frequently Asked Questions

(Click here to expand all descriptions)

  • What does Baptist Health South Florida do to promote radiation safety?

At Baptist Health South Florida, your safety is our number-one concern. Patients can feel unsettled when they find out they need a medical imaging procedure. Baptist Health exceeds national standards in patient radiation safety and regards your safety as its top priority. The following is meant to inform you and help you feel at ease with your procedure.

  • Which medical imaging procedures expose me to radiation?

There are many types of medical imaging procedures, each of which uses different technologies and techniques. Ultrasound imaging (also called sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to view soft tissues, such as muscles and internal organs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses radio waves and magnetic fields to produce images. Unlike ultrasound and MRI, projection radiography (commonly called standard X-ray), computed tomography (CT), fluoroscopy and nuclear medicine procedures all use ionizing radiation to generate images of the body. These different imaging procedures use different amounts of ionizing radiation.

  • What types of imaging procedures are associated with the highest radiation doses?

CT scans, fluoroscopy and nuclear medicine procedures are associated with the highest radiation doses. Although these imaging procedures expose you to more radiation than traditional X-ray exams do, they also provide much more detailed images, which allows your doctor to detect and precisely locate a vast array of medical conditions.

  • Can CT scans increase my risk of cancer?

Cancer risk from radiation delivered by CT exams has not been demonstrated. However, radiation at higher levels than those delivered by CT exams is known to be carcinogenic. Consequently, the potential risk of cancer at lower doses, such as those delivered by CT exams, cannot be completely excluded.

  • Is the radiation dose from imaging procedures the same for every patient?

The radiation dose from imaging procedures varies from patient to patient. A particular radiation dose will depend on the size of the body part examined, the type of procedure and the type of equipment used. This is all taken into consideration in order to use the minimum necessary dosage while not compromising the diagnostic quality of the image.

  • How does the radiation dose received in CT exams compare to that of natural radiation?

The radiation dose from an adult head CT exam is equivalent to the radiation received by 39 round-trip flights from New York to Los Angeles and to 10 months of natural radiation. From an adult abdomen CT exam is equivalent to 74 round-trip flights from New York to Los Angeles and 20 months of natural radiation. From an abdomen CT in a 5-year-old child, the dose is equivalent to 19 round-trip flights from New York to Los Angeles and five months of natural radiation.

  • What is ALARA ?

ALARA is an acronym for As Low As Reasonably Achievable. Baptist Health uses this radiation safety principle for minimizing radiation doses. ALARA is not only a sound safety principle, but is a regulatory requirement for all radiation safety programs, including those of Baptist Health

  • What is Image Gently?

Image Gently is an educational and awareness campaign, created by the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, in which Baptist Health helps promote optimal scanning strategies. Some examples include:

Imaging when there is a clear medical benefit
    Imaging only the indicated area
Imaging using the lowest possible amount of radiation based on the
size and age of the patient
