Pre-operative checklist
| Do not eat or drink anything, including water, gum or hard candy, after midnight before the day of your surgery. | |
| If you smoke, we recommend that you quit or cut down. | |
| Do not take any aspirin, Advil, Aleve, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), vitamins or herbal supplements for 10 days prior to your surgery, unless otherwise directed by your surgeon. | |
| Take all prescribed blood pressure and heart medicine, antacids, steroids and anticonvulsant medications the morning of surgery, with just a sip of water. If you require insulin, take it as prescribed by your primary care physician. Make sure he or she knows you are having surgery. | |
| Leave personal belongings and valuables, such as money, credit cards and jewelry, at home. If possible, leave contact lenses at home and bring eyewear that will assist you with the completion of necessary patient forms. | |
| If your child is having surgery, bring a favorite toy or blanket. If necessary, bring formula or any special food your child needs. | |
| Do not wear eye makeup. It is best if you wear no makeup at all. | |
| Do not use any alcohol-based products such as hair spray, gel or cologne. | |
| Dress comfortably, preferably in low-heeled shoes and clothing that can be fastened around you, rather than slipped over your head. | |
| You must have a responsible adult drive you home. For your safety, we will not allow you to drive yourself home. If you wish to take a taxi cab, a friend or relative must be with you. | |
| When you arrive at Medical Arts Surgery Center on the day of your surgery, please check in at the reception desk. | |
| The pre-operative assessment nurse will contact you before your surgery. If you haven’t received the call, please call 786-596-2806. | |

What to expect after surgery
Following your surgery, you will be brought to the Recovery Room where nurses will provide the special care required by patients who have received anesthesia. Upon your arrival, the anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist will give a complete report on your surgery and your condition to the Recovery Room nurse.
While you are in the Recovery Room, specially trained nurses will closely monitor your condition. You may have blurred vision, a dry mouth or chills. Bandages are checked and vital signs are watched closely. You may still have an IV. If you hurt, ask the nurse for medication. Because of the anesthesia, you may not remember all that happens while you are in the Recovery Room.
Before you leave, you will receive instructions for what to do at home. If possible, have your companion listen to these instructions, too. Ask any questions you might have. A member of the Medical Arts Surgery Center team will call after your surgery to check how you are doing. Be sure to mention any problems you are having. Write down your questions or concerns and bring your list when you see your doctor for a follow-up visit.
